8-10 months before the wedding start looking for save the date invitations. While you are shopping for these start thinking about colors, themes, or styles you may like for your wedding invitations. Having an idea of what you really want will only make the process that much easier.
6-8 months before the wedding mail your save the dates. Once those are out the door, establish a budget for your invitations and narrow down your favorite designs.
